Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are a family of polyunsaturated fats, including ALA from plants and EPA and DHA from fish and algae.

Is 1,000 mg fish oil 1,000 mg omega-3?

Supplement formulations vary widely, so the EPA and DHA amounts on the label matter alongside total oil weight. Products may contain triglycerides, ethyl esters or phospholipids. All these forms can raise blood EPA and DHA, while differences in absorption do not establish superior clinical results for every use. 1

What if you do not eat fish?

Algal oils provide DHA and some also provide EPA, usually in triglyceride form. Krill oil supplies omega-3s mainly as phospholipids. Studies disagree about whether krill oil is better absorbed than fish oil; plant ALA remains nutritionally useful but is not a direct substitute for the same amount of EPA and DHA. 1
