Prebiotics

Prebiotics are substances, mostly types of fiber such as inulin, that gut microbes selectively feed on.

Which foods supply these fibers?

Inulin and oligofructose occur in foods such as chicory, artichokes, leeks, onions, garlic and asparagus. Cooled cooked potatoes, pasta and rice provide resistant starch, another substrate for gut microbes. 1

Does the fiber target mean a prebiotic dose?

German guidance recommends at least 30 g of total dietary fiber daily. That refers to the diet as a whole, not 30 g of an isolated prebiotic powder. 2
