Psyllium

Psyllium comes from the seed husk of Plantago ovata. Its gel-forming fiber holds water in the bowel.

Also listed as Psyllium Husk, Psyllium Fiber, Metamucil (brand name), ispaghula

Why is fluid essential?

French prescribing information warns that too little liquid can cause throat or esophageal obstruction. Dry swallowing is unsafe. The same information calls for medical supervision with thyroid hormones and diabetes medicines; psyllium can affect medicine absorption. 1

When is self-treatment inappropriate?

Swallowing problems, unexplained blood in stool, bowel changes lasting over two weeks, or abdominal pain with nausea or vomiting warrant medical or pharmacy assessment before use. Pain with vomiting can signal obstruction. 2

What side effects occur?

Gas and bloating are common concerns. Allergic reactions can occur, including after inhaling the powder during preparation. 3
