Saccharomyces boulardii

Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast, a strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae first isolated from tropical fruit.

The strain and viable count matter

Probiotic labels can identify the strain and colony-forming units, or CFU, the measure of viable organisms. NIH advises looking for counts through the end of shelf life and following storage instructions. A larger count alone does not establish a better product. 1

What amounts have trials used?

The German hospital trial tested 250 mg twice daily, starting within 24 hours of antibiotics and continuing for seven days afterward. That regimen did not prevent diarrhea in its participants. A dose appearing in a trial is therefore not a promise of benefit or an individualized recommendation. 2
