Fatty acid
Short-Chain Fatty Acid
Short-chain fatty acids, or SCFAs, are compounds gut microbes produce when they ferment certain fibers. Butyrate, propionate and acetate are the main examples.
What do we know about tolerability?
Two of the 24 completers in the tributyrin pilot reported gastrointestinal discomfort, and triglycerides increased in the higher-dose group. The short study cannot establish long-term safety. 1
More fiber can take adjustment
A sudden large fiber intake can cause gas, abdominal pain or stool changes. DGE advises a gradual increase for people unused to high intakes and adequate fluid alongside whole-grain fiber. 2
For information, not individual medical advice. Ingredient studies do not establish the effectiveness of these products.
