Sodium
Sodium is an essential mineral and electrolyte that the body needs for fluid balance and nerve signals. Most dietary sodium comes from table salt.
Low blood sodium is not simply a low-salt diet
DGE describes low blood sodium in settings such as heavy losses, gastrointestinal illness or excessive diuretic use combined with very high water intake. Confusion, vomiting and seizures can occur. These are medical problems, not evidence that routine salt restriction should be corrected with tablets. 1
Some people are more salt-sensitive
DGE notes greater salt sensitivity in older adults and people with kidney impairment, among other groups. A sodium-loading exercise experiment should not be treated as reassurance for these populations. 2 3
