Vitamin B Complex

Vitamin B complex is a supplement that combines several or all of the eight water-soluble B vitamins, such as thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, B6, folate and B12.

What makes two B-complex products different?

The stress review included different combinations and doses, often with additional nutrients. For comparison with a study, the useful information is the full ingredient list and each daily amount, not just the words “B complex” on the front. 1

B12 may appear as cyanocobalamin, methylcobalamin or other forms. NIH finds no evidence of different supplement absorption rates by B12 form. An “active” name alone therefore does not establish a better clinical result. 2

A targeted supplement answers a different question

DGE recommends 400 µg folic acid daily, or equivalent other folates, for women who could become pregnant, beginning at least four weeks before conception and continuing through the first trimester. This specific prevention recommendation is not evidence that more of every B vitamin is better. 3

For vegan diets, DGE specifically identifies B12 supplementation. Whether a combined product supplies an appropriate amount is a label question; the word “complex” does not answer it. 4
