Vitamin B Complex
Vitamin B complex is a supplement that combines several or all of the eight water-soluble B vitamins, such as thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, B6, folate and B12.
What it is studied for
The strongest rated effects first. Bars show the size of the effect, the letter grades the evidence, and each rating lists the studies behind it.
What does B complex mean?
The B-vitamin family includes thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), B6, biotin (B7), folate and B12. They help the body use energy from food and form red blood cells. “B complex” brings several of these nutrients together; research formulations differ in their ingredients and amounts. 1 2
Why are they studied together?
B vitamins participate in connected biochemical pathways, including the processing of homocysteine, a substance measured in blood. The idea that combined supplementation might help mood is biologically plausible. In trials, however, a change in vitamin or homocysteine levels did not consistently explain a change in mood. 2
A specific need can also call for a specific vitamin. DGE identifies B12 supplementation as necessary with a vegan diet and recommends folic acid around conception. Neither situation automatically establishes a need for a high-dose mixture of every B vitamin. 3 4

Questions people ask
Is B complex an energy stimulant?
B vitamins help the body use energy from food. That normal role does not establish a stimulant effect; the supplement studies report mixed, product-specific findings on vigor and stamina. 1 5
Can it help with stress?
A review found a small average improvement in reported stress after at least four weeks. Different formulations and variable findings limit how confidently that predicts a benefit for one person. 2
Does it improve memory?
A large review found no cognitive benefit from B12 alone or B12 with folic acid, with or without B6, in people without overt B12 deficiency or advanced neurological disease. 6
Does water solubility make high doses harmless?
No. EFSA’s B6 upper level is based on nerve damage risk. Biotin can also distort some blood-test results, even though the concern is not conventional toxicity. 7 8
Can a B complex replace a pregnancy folate plan?
Only the actual folate amount and timing can be compared with the recommendation. DGE’s recommendation around conception is specific to folic acid or equivalent folates, not to a generic B-complex label. 3
Do vegan diets require all B vitamins as supplements?
DGE specifically identifies B12 supplementation as necessary. That recommendation does not by itself establish a need for a high-dose full B complex. 4
