Mental Energy

A guide to feeling mentally alert, what supplement studies measure, and when persistent tiredness needs a different approach.

More awake, or less exhausted?

This page uses mental energy to mean perceived alertness and the ability to sustain attention. In caffeine studies, feeling more alert and performing better on attention tasks are distinct outcomes; neither automatically means better memory or complex decision-making. 1

Why the cause matters

Poor sleep, stress, depression, illness, and some medicines can all contribute to tiredness. If it lasts for weeks without an explanation or interferes with daily life, the NHS recommends assessment. Anemia, diabetes, and thyroid problems are among the conditions a clinician may investigate. 2

What caffeine does well

A 2022 narrative review found the clearest cognitive benefits in attention and vigilance, alongside improved alertness. Most research used single doses, leaving uncertainty about repeated daily use. A brief improvement on a test should therefore be read as a specific effect, rather than a general upgrade in thinking. 1

CaffeineMixed

The benefit is most consistent for short-term alertness and attention. Evidence for memory and complex thinking is less consistent. 1

Where creatine fits

A 2023 narrative review describes promising cognition and memory findings, particularly in older adults and during sleep deprivation. This is a different question from whether a well-rested person will feel more energetic throughout an ordinary day. Several authors disclosed creatine-industry relationships. 3

CreatineToo little evidence

Potential benefits depend on the studied population and test. The review does not establish a standard regimen for everyday mental energy. 3

When B12 has a clear purpose

Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause tiredness and neurological symptoms. Correcting deficiency matters, but NIH ODS reports no energy benefit from extra B12 in people already getting enough. 4

Vitamin B12Not supported

Adequate B12 status changes the interpretation: a deficiency treatment is not automatically an energy enhancer. 4

Scope of this review

This page does not review every nootropic blend, amino acid, or botanical listed in the directory.

Food and B12 status

Fish, meat, eggs, and dairy contain B12. Fortified foods provide another source, and people eating little or no animal food have a greater risk of inadequate intake. 4

Why a blend is hard to judge

The caffeine review found that many multi-ingredient trials could not separate the contributions of individual ingredients. A result for one tested drink does not identify which component helped or establish that another blend will behave the same way. 1

EU caffeine guidance is a safety boundary

EFSA identifies up to 200 mg in a single dose and 400 mg across a day as amounts without safety concerns for healthy, nonpregnant adults. These are not performance targets. Even 100 mg near bedtime can disturb sleep in some adults; pregnancy guidance is 200 mg daily from all sources. 5

A medication review can matter

Metformin and medicines that suppress stomach acid can reduce B12 absorption. A clinician or pharmacist can review this alongside symptoms and supplement use. 4

Questions people ask

Does coffee improve memory?

The cited caffeine review found more consistent benefits for attention than for memory. 1

Can creatine replace sleep?

The review discusses performance during sleep deprivation; that does not establish creatine as a replacement for sleep. 3

Is more caffeine always better?

EFSA safety amounts are not a dose recommendation, and caffeine can disturb sleep even below those amounts. 5

When should tiredness be checked?

When it persists for weeks without a clear reason, affects daily life, or comes with symptoms such as weight loss or nighttime gasping. 2

Will high-dose B12 give me extra energy?

NIH ODS finds no such benefit when B12 intake is already adequate. 4
