Essential Health

This page uses essential health as a guide to nutrition basics, not a single treatment target.

Which question are we answering?

This page separates nutritional adequacy from disease prevention. It does not assign a single score to overall health or treat every nutrient as a solution to the same problem.

What belongs in the foundation?

DGE emphasizes vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts and plant oils, alongside physical activity. 1

What if I feel persistently unwell?

Fatigue can reflect sleep problems, stress or illness. Persistent unexplained tiredness deserves assessment rather than self-diagnosis. 2

How is nutritional status assessed?

Vitamin B12 offers a useful example: blood concentrations help assess supply, and methylmalonic acid can clarify borderline results. Kidney impairment can also raise this marker. The result needs clinical context, rather than being read as a general health score. 3

Can supplements replace food?

NIH recommends meeting nutritional needs primarily through food; supplements can address needs that food alone cannot meet. 4

What do the studies actually measure?

The omega-3 review followed cardiovascular events and deaths over at least a year. Such outcomes answer a different question from whether a nutrient participates in normal metabolism. 5

Omega-3Mixed

In 86 trials involving 162,796 adults, EPA/DHA had little or no effect on deaths or overall cardiovascular events. Triglycerides fell; small benefits for some coronary outcomes remained possible. The mixed verdict concerns broad prevention, not treatment of high triglycerides. 5

Vitamin B12Too little evidence

B12 supports nerve function, red blood cell formation and DNA synthesis. Those established roles alone do not demonstrate an additional general health benefit from supplements in people already adequately supplied. 3

FolateToo little evidence

Folate supports DNA synthesis and cell division; deficiency can cause megaloblastic anemia. This page does not extend those functions into a universal prevention claim. 6

What requires caution?

Vitamin K can interfere with warfarin. Excess preformed vitamin A during pregnancy can cause birth defects. 4

Vitamin K

Warfarin users need to discuss supplements containing vitamin K with their clinician. 4

What matters in everyday meals?

DGE emphasizes varied plant foods, whole grains and regular activity. Dairy provides calcium, iodine and B vitamins; choosing plant alternatives calls for attention to those nutrients. The emphasis is on meeting needs within a workable eating pattern. 1

What this review covers

The nutrient verdicts concern additional broad benefit, not treatment of diagnosed deficiencies. This page does not review every substance assigned to this category.

Questions people ask

Is more always better?

Excess nutrient intake can exceed safety limits. 4

Can I replace meals with vitamins?

Nutritional needs should primarily be met through food. 4

Which foods matter?

DGE prioritizes a varied, mostly plant-based diet. 1

Does tiredness prove deficiency?

No. Sleep problems, stress and illnesses are also possible causes. 2
