Zeaxanthin
Zeaxanthin is a yellow-orange plant pigment in the carotenoid family, occurring alongside lutein in foods such as corn and egg yolk.
Safety depends on the full formula
Current and former smokers should avoid the older AREDS formula containing beta-carotene because of increased lung cancer risk; the NEI identifies AREDS2 as the alternative. This concern is about beta-carotene, not evidence that zeaxanthin carries the same risk. 1 2
What did EFSA assess?
EFSA’s 2012 assessment found no safety concern with the proposed synthetic-zeaxanthin use of up to 20 mg daily. Its assessment relied partly on animal toxicology and included uncertainty for missing chronic toxicity data; it is not a recommended intake or proof that higher doses improve vision. 3
