Hair Growth

More hair in the brush can mean temporary shedding or an ongoing hair-loss condition. Finding the cause is more useful than choosing a supplement by its “growth” claim.

Is extra shedding the same as hair loss?

Shedding can increase a few months after childbirth, a high fever, surgery or substantial weight loss. It often settles as the body recovers. Other causes, including hereditary hair loss, require a different approach. 1

How is the cause checked?

A dermatologist examines the scalp and asks when the change began. Blood tests or a scalp biopsy may help when a deficiency, disease or infection is suspected. 2

Can food intake affect hair?

Too little iron, protein or overall energy can contribute to hair loss. That makes nutritional adequacy relevant, but extra nutrients are not automatically helpful: excessive selenium, vitamin A or vitamin E has also been linked to hair loss. 3

What counts as better growth?

Hair studies may measure hair counts, density or a person’s impression of hair quality. Those outcomes are not interchangeable. The saw palmetto literature, for example, mixes these measures with different oral and topical products, making a single advertised success rate misleading. 4

Which supplements are worth investigating?

This section reviews biotin and saw palmetto and flags the safety concern with fo-ti. It does not evaluate GHK-Cu, lycopene or stinging nettle.

BiotinToo little evidence

A 2017 review found 18 reports of hair or nail improvement, all involving an underlying disorder. These cases do not establish that biotin grows hair in otherwise healthy people with adequate intake. 5

Saw palmettoToo little evidence

A 2020 systematic review described positive findings in small studies of oral or topical products, including combinations. Larger trials isolating saw palmetto are needed. NCCIH considers the evidence too limited for conclusions about male-pattern hair loss. 4 6

Fo-tiToo little evidence

Traditional use for hair does not establish benefit. LiverTox documents acute liver injury from Polygonum multiflorum, also called fo-ti, including severe and fatal cases. That risk matters when weighing a cosmetic goal. 7

When does replacing a nutrient make sense?

The AAD recommends biotin, iron or zinc supplementation when testing shows a deficiency, rather than routinely for normal levels. This is treatment of an identified shortfall, not a general promise of thicker hair. 2

NIH describes little evidence for biotin supplements marketed for hair, skin and nails. Evidence from rare childhood disorders cannot establish an everyday benefit for adults. 8

What can help beyond supplements?

Minoxidil can help early hair loss, but results generally take months and continued use is needed to retain the benefit. Whether it fits depends on the cause of the loss. 2

Gentler hair care and avoiding hairstyles that pull tightly can reduce damaging stress on hair. Adequate food intake also deserves attention when weight loss or a restrictive diet is part of the picture. 3

What should a hair-supplement label prompt me to check?

Biotin can distort laboratory results, including thyroid tests and tests used to assess heart attacks. Germany’s BfR advises telling the doctor or laboratory about current or recent biotin use before testing. A “normal hair maintenance” claim does not establish extra growth from extra biotin. 9

Saw palmetto may cause digestive symptoms, dizziness or headache and may be unsafe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. NCCIH advises discussing herbal products with a clinician when medicines are also being used. 6

Questions people ask

Does biotin make healthy hair grow faster?

Available evidence does not establish that benefit. The published improvement reports largely concern people with an underlying disorder. 5

How long can temporary shedding last?

Once the trigger has passed, fullness often returns over six to nine months. Ongoing stress can prolong shedding. 1

Can hair supplements make hair loss worse?

Excessive amounts of selenium, vitamin A or vitamin E have been linked to hair loss. More is not necessarily better. 3

Does an EU biotin hair claim prove regrowth?

No. BfR distinguishes maintaining normal hair from evidence that extra biotin benefits people already adequately supplied. 9

Is saw palmetto an established alternative to hair-loss medicines?

No. NCCIH says the small hair-loss studies are insufficient for firm conclusions. 6

Is fo-ti a low-risk natural option?

No. LiverTox identifies fo-ti as a well-established cause of liver injury, which can be severe. 7
