Prenatal Support
A guide to nutritional support before and during pregnancy, using German recommendations.
Where should I start?
A varied diet meets most increased nutrient needs in pregnancy. Folic acid and iodine are important exceptions. 1
Why does timing matter?
Folic acid before and during early pregnancy reduces the risk of neural tube defects. 2
What if I eat vegan?
Vitamin B12 supplementation, assessment of nutrient supply and qualified dietary advice are particularly important. 3

Every ratingEvery nutrient rated for prenatal support, with searchWhich supplements have a clear role?
The following amounts reflect German guidance for pregnancy. 1
Take 400 µg daily from pregnancy planning through week 12. If supplementation began less than four weeks before conception, German guidance recommends 800 µg daily through week 12. 1
When is iron appropriate?
Iron supplements should follow a laboratory-confirmed deficiency rather than be taken routinely. Excessive intake can also harm health. 3
What deserves extra caution?
Avoid iodine-rich algae products in pregnancy: iodine content varies greatly and contaminants may be present. 3
Questions people ask
Can food replace folic acid?
German recommendations call for supplementation alongside a balanced diet. 2
Should everyone take iron?
No. German guidance recommends targeted supplementation after a confirmed deficiency. 2
Do I need DHA if I avoid fish?
A DHA supplement is recommended when fatty sea fish is absent from the diet. 3
What if I have thyroid disease?
Discuss iodine with your clinician before taking it. 3
