Algae

Algae are a diverse group of mostly aquatic organisms that live by photosynthesis, from single-celled microalgae such as chlorella to large seaweeds.

More iodine is not always better

BfR warns that excessive iodine from seaweed can disturb thyroid function. Its 2026 consumer guidance cites a tolerable maximum chronic intake of 600 micrograms per day for adults and emphasizes checking both iodine content and a maximum daily portion. This upper level is not an intake target. 1 2

Blue-green algae need contamination controls

Some wild-harvested blue-green algae products can be contaminated with microcystins, toxins made by other cyanobacteria. At significant exposure levels these can damage the liver and kidneys. FDA describes batch testing and manufacturing controls as important protections and recommends medical advice before use during pregnancy, nursing or chronic illness, and before giving supplements to children. 3
