Alpha-GPC
Alpha-GPC (glycerophosphocholine) is a choline-containing compound that occurs naturally in the body and in small amounts in food.
Also listed as Alpha GPC, Alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine, L-alpha-glycerophosphocholin, glycerophosphocholine
Short studies cannot answer every safety question
EFSA’s evidence review described generally mild adverse events in therapeutic studies lasting up to six months. Constipation and nervousness occurred in one Alzheimer trial. A tolerable short course does not resolve safety over years. 1 2
How concerning is the stroke finding?
A large Korean observational study in adults aged 50 and older associated prescribed alpha-GPC with higher subsequent stroke risk. It cannot prove that alpha-GPC caused strokes: differences between users and nonusers may contribute. Still, it is a reason to avoid describing long-term use as risk-free. 2
A correction worth checking
The stroke paper was corrected in September 2026 for swapped diagnostic codes in the Methods description and an author-contribution entry. The correction does not report a revised effect estimate. 3
Pregnancy and allergy need the right context
The population in EFSA’s proposed use included pregnant and breastfeeding women, at the specified low intake. That conclusion cannot be extended to larger performance-oriented doses. The assessed ingredient originated from soy lecithin, so its source also matters when checking allergens. 1
