Alpha-GPC
Alpha-GPC (glycerophosphocholine) is a choline-containing compound that occurs naturally in the body and in small amounts in food.
Also listed as Alpha GPC, Alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine, L-alpha-glycerophosphocholin, glycerophosphocholine
Does it help healthy people focus?
In a 2024 crossover trial, 20 resistance-trained men received single doses of 315 mg or 630 mg alpha-GPC, or placebo. Stroop scores, a test of handling conflicting information, improved; the higher dose also improved completion speed. The abstract reported no significant group differences on the other two cognitive tests. 1
An encouraging result from one small, acute experiment does not establish sustained concentration in daily life. 1
Faster Stroop responses were task-specific, not evidence of broadly faster thinking. 1
What about memory loss?
A 2023 review included seven randomized trials and one prospective cohort in adults with neurological cognitive impairment. It found improvements on cognitive scales, including when alpha-GPC was added to donepezil. This is evidence about treatment in a clinical population, not prevention of dementia in healthy adults. 2
Will it increase mental energy?
A single-blind study of 39 volunteers found a tendency toward greater self-reported motivation during two weeks of treatment, with a difference at night. Its subjective ratings and short duration leave the everyday benefit uncertain. 3
A small motivation study cannot establish a reliable remedy for mental fatigue. 3
What the studies do not settle
The healthy-men trial was industry funded and retrospectively registered. It did not show group differences in self-rated mood, motivation or concentration. Brain fog was not a defined treatment target in that trial, so its test results should not be presented as a treatment for that symptom. 1
