Bifidobacterium bifidum
Bifidobacterium bifidum is a bacterial species that lives naturally in the human gut, especially in infants, and is used in probiotic products.
Can it ease IBS symptoms?
In a four-week trial involving 122 people with IBS, MIMBb75 improved overall symptoms, including bloating, compared with placebo. Adequate relief was reported by 47% versus 11%. This is encouraging short-term evidence for the tested strain and population. 1
One trial supports a possible benefit for IBS-related bloating; it does not establish the effect of every B. bifidum product. 1
Does changing the microbiome mean feeling better?
A crossover trial in healthy adults tested strain Bb for four weeks at approximately one billion live cells daily. It changed some fecal bacterial groups and butyrate concentrations, with the latter depending on starting levels. These findings support a biological effect, while leaving its practical health benefit open. 2
Changes in fecal bacteria and a microbial metabolite are evidence of activity, not proof of symptom relief. 2
