Bifidobacterium breve
Bifidobacterium breve is a bacterial species that lives naturally in the human gut, especially in infants, and is used in probiotic products.
Does it help children with constipation?
An Italian trial randomized 55 children to polyethylene glycol, a laxative, with or without a three-strain mixture containing B. breve M-16V. At one month, improvement did not differ significantly between groups. A later numerical difference in remission was also not statistically significant. 1
This small mixture trial found no clear added benefit; it cannot isolate the effect of B. breve alone. 1
Why is B-3 studied for body fat?
Following results in obese mice, a trial tested B-3 in 80 adults with BMI 25 to below 30. At 20 billion colony-forming units daily for 12 weeks, body fat was lower than with placebo, but blood markers did not differ significantly. Several authors worked for the manufacturer. 2
A preliminary body-fat finding in adults with overweight is not an established long-term weight-loss treatment. 2
