How much is too much?
BfR cites an EU adult upper level of 2,500 mg daily from all sources. Its separate proposal for supplements is no more than 500 mg per daily product dose. These are safety limits, not intake targets. 1
Side effects and medicines
Supplements can cause gas or constipation and interfere with levothyroxine, quinolone antibiotics and dolutegravir. A pharmacist can check medicine-specific timing. 2
Why avoid high doses?
Excessive long-term intake can contribute to urinary stones and impaired kidney function. Possible cardiovascular effects of high-dose supplements remain a concern under discussion. 1
