Calcium

Calcium is an essential mineral and the most abundant one in the body. Nearly all of it is stored in bones and teeth.

Also listed as Ca2+, Ca, Coral Calcium

Does more calcium build stronger bones?

A 2015 review of 59 randomized trials in adults over 50 found small bone-density increases with additional calcium from food or supplements. Gains were around 1–2% and did not keep accumulating with longer treatment. 1

Bone densityToo little evidence

These small changes do not establish a meaningful reduction in fractures. 1

What else matters for bones?

DGE places calcium alongside physical activity and vitamin D status in bone health. Meeting a nutritional requirement and proving a benefit from extra tablets are different questions. 1 2
