Chlorogenic Acid

Chlorogenic acid is a polyphenol found in coffee beans. Roasting reduces it, so concentrated extracts are made from unroasted green coffee beans.

How well has safety been studied?

NIH describes limited safety research on green-coffee extract. Reported events include headache and urinary tract infection; reporting an event does not by itself establish its cause. Caffeine adds a separate stimulant exposure, particularly in combinations with other stimulants. 1

Coffee and capsules count together

EFSA identifies up to 200 mg caffeine in a single dose and 400 mg across a day as amounts without safety concerns for generally healthy, nonpregnant adults. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, its daily figure is 200 mg from all sources. These are caffeine assessments, not safe-dose limits for chlorogenic acid or green-coffee extracts. 2

Even 100 mg caffeine near bedtime can affect sleep in some adults. The capsule therefore belongs in the same caffeine tally as coffee, tea and energy drinks. 2
