Chlorogenic Acid
Chlorogenic acid is a polyphenol found in coffee beans. Roasting reduces it, so concentrated extracts are made from unroasted green coffee beans.
Also listed as Coffee bean extract, Green coffee extract
Does it lower blood pressure?
A 2015 analysis pooled five trials with 364 participants and found average reductions of 4.31 mmHg in systolic pressure and 3.68 mmHg in diastolic pressure. The studies differed considerably, all involved Asian populations, and manufacturers funded them. This is a useful signal requiring independent confirmation. 1
Small, manufacturer-funded trials reported lower readings; their limitations reduce confidence in a dependable effect. 1
What about weight and blood sugar?
A 2021 review of green-coffee extracts included 15 studies with 637 participants. Average differences favored the extracts by 1.24 kg for weight and 2.21 mg/dL for fasting glucose. HbA1c, a longer-term glucose measure, did not significantly improve. These extract results cannot isolate chlorogenic acid’s contribution. 2
The average weight difference was modest, and the intervention was green-coffee extract. 2
