Mineral
Copper
Copper is an essential trace mineral found in shellfish, nuts, seeds and organ meats. The body uses it in enzymes for iron metabolism and connective tissue.
Why are the European numbers different?
EFSA set an adult safe intake of 0.07 mg per kilogram body weight daily and concluded that copper retention is not expected up to 5 mg daily. This concerns total exposure, not a supplement target. Excess accumulation can damage the liver. 1
What does BfR recommend for products?
BfR proposes at most 1 mg copper per recommended daily serving of an adult supplement, with a warning that it is unsuitable for children and adolescents. This is a risk-management recommendation, not a legally fixed maximum. 2
