D-Mannose
D-mannose is a simple sugar related to glucose, found in small amounts in fruits such as cranberries and apples. It is mostly studied for urinary tract infections.
Does it prevent another infection?
In a blinded UK trial of 598 women with recurrent infections, 2 g daily for six months did not significantly reduce medically attended urinary tract infections: 51.0% with D-mannose versus 55.7% with placebo. Earlier, smaller studies were positive, but lacked placebo controls. 1
