Fiber

Fiber, or dietary fiber, is the part of plant foods the small intestine cannot digest. It comes in soluble and insoluble types, and gut bacteria ferment much of it.

Also listed as Dietary Fiber

The ingredient name matters more than “high fiber”

Psyllium absorbs liquid and swells, which helps create a stool that is easier to pass. It is sold in powders, granules, capsules and other forms. Inulin behaves differently: it is readily fermented by bacteria and does not have the same thickening properties. 1 2

For a constipation claim, psyllium has direct trial evidence. For a claim about feeding particular gut bacteria, fructans and galacto-oligosaccharides are among the types studied. Those are different reasons to choose a product, not a ranking in which one fiber wins at everything. 3 4

What should the label make clear?

The relevant comparison with research is the named fiber and its daily amount. The constipation review found differences by fiber type, amount and duration; a capsule count alone does not describe those study conditions. 3

For psyllium, the package instructions about mixing and fluid are part of safe use. MedlinePlus specifies at least 240 mL of liquid with a dose and advises against use for longer than one week without medical guidance when used as a laxative. 1
