Fiber
Fiber, or dietary fiber, is the part of plant foods the small intestine cannot digest. It comes in soluble and insoluble types, and gut bacteria ferment much of it.

Why might more fiber initially feel worse?
Gas, abdominal discomfort and changes in stool can follow a rapid rise in fiber intake. The DGE advises increasing the amount gradually and paying attention to fluid intake. The constipation review also found more flatulence with supplements than with controls. 1 2
When psyllium needs extra care
Difficulty swallowing, intestinal blockage or rectal bleeding are reasons to discuss psyllium with a clinician before use. Its powder can also trigger allergy if inhaled. Breathing or swallowing difficulty, rash, vomiting or stomach pain during use need prompt medical attention. 3
Can fiber interfere with medication?
MedlinePlus specifies a three-hour separation between psyllium and digoxin, aspirin or other salicylates, and nitrofurantoin. It also advises discussing existing conditions, pregnancy, breastfeeding and other medicines with the prescriber or pharmacist. 3
