Botanical
Flaxseed
Flaxseed, also called linseed, is the seed of the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum. It supplies fiber, lignans and the plant omega-3 fat alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).
Also listed as Flaxseed Oil, Flax Seed, Organic Flaxseed Oil, Flaxseed Powder
How much omega-3 does it contain?
NIH lists 2.35 g ALA per tablespoon of whole flaxseed and 7.26 g per tablespoon of flaxseed oil. These are nutrient-content figures, not treatment doses. 1
US adequate intakes for ALA are 1.6 g daily for adult men and 1.1 g for adult women, from the whole diet. 1
Is it equivalent to fish oil?
ALA is essential in the diet, but conversion to EPA and DHA is limited. Flaxseed oil therefore supplies a different omega-3 profile from fish oil. 1
