What does German guidance say?
BfR’s June 2026 guidance sets an adult limit of 15–20 g a day for raw ground seeds and recommends no more than 20 g daily because of cadmium. These are daily amounts, not per-meal allowances. 1
When could seeds be unsuitable?
Linseed medicines are unsuitable with swallowing problems or bowel obstruction. Unexplained rectal bleeding needs assessment; EMA advises professional advice if constipation persists after three days of use. 2
Side effects and medicines
Higher doses can cause bloating, fullness, and diarrhea. NCCIH flags theoretical interactions with anticoagulants and antiplatelet medicines, so medicine users should discuss supplement use with their clinician. 3
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
NCCIH considers pregnancy evidence inconclusive, with possible concerns for flaxseed and little safety information for flaxseed oil. Breastfeeding safety is also poorly established. 3
