Green Coffee Extract
Green coffee extract is made from unroasted coffee beans and contains chlorogenic acids and caffeine.
How much weight changed in trials?
A 2020 meta-analysis of 15 randomized trials involving 897 adults found an average 1.23 kg greater weight reduction with green coffee extract than control. Waist circumference fell by about 1 cm; body-fat percentage did not change significantly. 1 2
This is a modest average signal, not evidence of substantial weight loss for everyone. NIH also highlights poor methods in earlier trials and the retraction of one widely promoted study. 1 2
What did a diabetes trial find?
In a 10-week trial, 44 adults with type 2 diabetes and overweight or obesity received 400 mg extract twice daily or placebo. The fasting-glucose result was borderline, while insulin and estimated insulin resistance did not differ significantly. Some lipid and inflammation markers improved, but LDL and total cholesterol did not. 3
The small trial offers metabolic leads, but does not establish reliable diabetes control or long-term protection from complications. 3
