Linoleic Acid

Linoleic acid is an essential omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid. The body cannot make it, and it comes mainly from vegetable oils, nuts and seeds.

Which foods supply it?

BfR identifies safflower, soybean and sunflower oils as rich sources of linoleic acid. 1

BZfE reports 48–74% linoleic acid in conventional sunflower oil, compared with 2–17% in high-oleic varieties. Oil type therefore matters more than the word “sunflower” alone. 2

EFSA sets an adequate intake at 4% of dietary energy. This is a dietary reference, not a supplement prescription. 3
