Magnesium Aspartate

Magnesium aspartate is a magnesium salt of aspartic acid, an amino acid. It is one of several forms of magnesium used in supplements.

How much supplemental magnesium is too much?

BfR recommends no more than 250 mg daily from supplements for people aged four and older, divided into at least two portions. This is a recommendation to limit diarrhea, not a ceiling on magnesium naturally present in food. 1

Who needs extra care?

Kidney impairment increases the risk of magnesium toxicity. Magnesium can also reduce absorption of certain antibiotics and oral bisphosphonates. NIH advises antibiotics at least two hours before or four to six hours after magnesium; bisphosphonates need at least two hours of separation. 2
