Manganese

Manganese is an essential trace mineral that is part of several enzymes. It comes from foods such as whole grains, nuts, legumes and tea.

Why do EU and US safety values differ?

EFSA could not establish a tolerable upper intake level and instead set a safe level of 8 mg daily for adults, including pregnancy and breastfeeding, from all dietary sources. This is neither a daily target nor a threshold above which harm is certain. The US adult upper limit is 11 mg daily. 1 2 3

Who is more vulnerable to excess?

Chronic liver disease reduces manganese elimination. Iron deficiency increases absorption. Both can increase vulnerability to manganese toxicity, which can affect the nervous system. 3
