Manganese

Manganese is an essential trace mineral that is part of several enzymes. It comes from foods such as whole grains, nuts, legumes and tea.

Will extra manganese strengthen bones?

A two-year trial in 59 postmenopausal women found improved spinal bone density with calcium plus manganese, zinc, and copper. It cannot identify manganese’s individual contribution. 1

Bone densityToo little evidence

A combination result does not establish the effect of manganese alone. 1

Why is metabolism being studied?

Animal studies suggest benefits for glucose handling and oxidative stress. Human observational findings are inconsistent, and trials establishing a diabetes benefit are lacking. 1
