Papain

Papain is a protein-splitting enzyme obtained from the milky latex of unripe papaya fruit.

Who needs to consider allergy?

EFSA could not exclude allergic reactions to the assessed enzyme, particularly in people allergic to papaya, pineapple, kiwi, soy, fig, or pollen. Its safety conclusion concerns specified food-processing uses, not unrestricted supplement use. 1

Is wound treatment a separate issue?

Yes. FDA’s 2008 enforcement action concerned unapproved topical papain drugs after serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. It also noted possible cross-reactivity with latex allergy. Those reports concern application to skin, not an estimate of risk from an oral capsule. 2
