Questions people ask

Is papain the same as papaya?

No. Papain is an enzyme obtained from the plant; a papaya preparation contains more than an isolated enzyme. 1 2

Does food-use safety establish a supplement dose?

No. EFSA evaluated particular food-processing uses and exposure levels, not a dose for treating indigestion. 1

Does the FDA action mean all papain products were banned?

No. The action described by FDA targeted unapproved topical drug products, not every food or supplement containing papain. 3
