Which digestion problem is an enzyme meant to address?
Digestive enzymes break food into smaller components: amylases act on carbohydrates, proteases on proteins and lipases on fats. A supplement blend may combine these with other enzymes, so its purpose depends on its ingredients. 1
When the pancreas does not release enough digestive enzymes, doctors typically prescribe pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, or PERT. This treats exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and helps digestion and nutrient absorption. It is a different clinical situation from trying a supplement for unexplained indigestion. 2

Questions people ask
Are enzymes useful when the pancreas is not working properly?
Yes. PERT is a standard treatment for diagnosed exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and helps nutrient absorption. 2
Does one blend work for all bloating?
Trials in functional dyspepsia found benefits with particular blends, but they do not answer that broader question. 1 3
Is lactase proven to prevent all lactose symptoms?
No. IQWiG finds the small trials too uncertain for a firm conclusion about symptom relief. 4
Can prescription pancreatic enzymes be swapped freely?
The PANCREAZE label advises against direct substitution and calls for monitoring and dose adjustment when switching products. 5
