Papain
Papain is a protein-splitting enzyme obtained from the milky latex of unripe papaya fruit.
Does it relieve bloating?
A placebo-controlled trial reported improvements in bloating and constipation with Caricol, a papaya preparation. It did not test isolated papain, so it cannot establish that a papain capsule produces the same result. 1
Evidence for a papaya preparation cannot identify papain’s individual effect. 1
What about inflammation claims?
Germany’s Verbraucherzentrale concludes that reliable human evidence is insufficient for the anti-inflammatory effects claimed for papain. Its protein-splitting action alone does not establish a clinical benefit. 2
