Postbiotics

Postbiotics are preparations of inactivated microorganisms, mostly bacteria, and the substances they produce or are made of.

What makes two products comparable?

A 2026 review identified 101 clinical studies and substantial differences in manufacturing and reporting. Useful comparison details include the named organism, inactivation method, administered quantity and quality controls. A label saying only “postbiotic blend” leaves much of that comparison unanswered. 1

Does butyrate count?

Purified microbial metabolites alone fall outside the ISAPP definition. A product may contain metabolites alongside microbial cells or cell fragments, but those formulations should not be treated as identical. 2
