Postbiotics
Postbiotics are preparations of inactivated microorganisms, mostly bacteria, and the substances they produce or are made of.
Can it ease irritable bowel symptoms?
A German trial randomized 443 adults with irritable bowel syndrome to heat-inactivated B. bifidum MIMBb75 or placebo for eight weeks. With one billion nonviable cells daily, 34% met the combined pain-and-relief endpoint, compared with 19% on placebo. The manufacturer-funded result provides evidence for this specific preparation; it does not make other postbiotics interchangeable. 1
What about diarrhea?
A review of children younger than five found that heat-killed L. acidophilus LB shortened diarrhea by about 20 hours across four trials involving 224 children. The authors considered the evidence limited; results cannot simply be transferred to every product or age group. 2
A separate signal in young adults
In a crossover trial, 69 young adults with chronic diarrhea received Probio-Eco and placebo for 21 days each. Stool consistency, frequency and urgency improved during postbiotic treatment. Associated changes in microbes and metabolites offer clues to how it might work, but do not establish the causal pathway or long-term benefit. 3
Do changes in inflammation mean better recovery?
A seven-day trial in 120 intensive-care stroke patients reported improved inflammatory markers with a product described as postbiotic. Neurological impairment and APACHE II illness-severity scores did not improve. The reported formulation contained microbial metabolites and exopolysaccharides. 4
For product comparisons, that description raises a question about meeting the cell-based ISAPP definition. 4 5
Biomarker findings in critically ill patients do not establish a general anti-inflammatory benefit. 4
