What does potassium iodide provide?

Potassium iodide is a source of iodine, which the thyroid uses to make its hormones. It appears in dietary supplements, but its medical uses involve a different purpose and dose. 1

Why is it used in radiation emergencies?

A large dose of stable iodine can block the thyroid from taking up radioactive iodine. This protects the thyroid specifically: potassium iodide does not shield the rest of the body or protect against other radioactive substances. CDC guidance reserves it for situations in which public-health officials advise its use. 2

Questions people ask

Can iodized salt replace an emergency tablet?

No. CDC says iodized salt and iodine-containing foods do not provide the protection of emergency potassium iodide. Timing and official instructions matter. 2

Should emergency iodine be taken just in case?

CDC advises using it only when public-health officials recommend it. It is not general protection against radiation. 2

Does the adult upper limit mean a target intake?

No. The EU figure of 600 μg concerns the upper boundary of long-term total intake; it is not the daily requirement. 3

Can iodine be used during pregnancy?

DGE distinguishes total iodine needs from supplementation and recommends medical discussion. Emergency iodine follows separate official guidance and medical monitoring. 4 5

Does the surgery evidence show no possible benefit?

The newer meta-analysis found no clear improvement in the measured surgical outcomes. Uncertainty remains, and the authors recommend larger randomized trials. 6
