Skin texture

What smoother skin means in research, how collagen and other supplements have performed, and how to tell a cosmetic concern from a change that needs assessment.

What does “better skin texture” actually mean?

This page uses skin texture to discuss surface roughness and fine lines, while keeping hydration and elasticity separate.

The distinction matters when reading a study: researchers can measure water content, how skin responds to suction, or the shape of its surface. These measurements describe different properties, even when a product is advertised simply as improving skin. 1 2

Why can skin look or feel rougher?

Dryness can make fine lines more noticeable, while moisturizer can soften their appearance by retaining water in the skin. Sun exposure also accelerates visible aging. A change in appearance can therefore reflect several influences, rather than one missing nutrient. 3

A persistent rough patch can have a different explanation. Actinic keratoses are areas of sun-damaged skin that can feel scaly or like sandpaper. They commonly occur on exposed areas and deserve attention because some can develop into skin cancer. 4 5

How do trials measure a smoother surface?

A 2019 collagen-product trial assessed roughness using skin replicas and an optical three-dimensional method. Other measurements assessed hydration, elasticity and density. Reporting several improvements does not make those outcomes interchangeable. 1

The hyaluronic-acid trial below combined image analysis with measurements of water content and water loss through the skin. It studied healthy adults, so its findings cannot establish treatment for acne scarring, eczema or other skin disease. 2

When is a texture change more than a cosmetic concern?

The NHS advises assessment for new patches, patches that bleed, grow, change color or become tender, and patches on the lips. A new lump also needs checking. These changes should not be treated as a reason to try a beauty supplement first. 4

Moderate or severe acne scarring, or marked redness and inflammation, are also reasons to seek a dermatologist’s assessment before trying a retinoid product. 6

Does collagen reliably smooth skin?

The larger evidence picture is less reassuring than many individual trials. A 2025 meta-analysis included 23 randomized trials with 1,474 participants. The overall analysis favored collagen for hydration, elasticity and wrinkles, but neither the high-quality-study subgroup nor studies without pharmaceutical-company funding showed statistically significant benefits. The authors concluded that the evidence does not support collagen for preventing or treating skin aging. 7

CollagenMixed

One German trial tested a drink containing 2.5 g collagen peptides plus acerola extract, vitamins and zinc in 72 healthy women aged at least 35. After 12 weeks, roughness and other skin measurements improved versus placebo. Because this was a combination product, the result cannot isolate collagen’s contribution, and the later review raises doubts about how dependable the broader benefits are. 1 7

What about hyaluronic acid and astaxanthin?

These studies offer narrower signals: a small trial of one hyaluronic-acid product and pooled astaxanthin results that differ by outcome. Neither establishes a general solution for every uneven skin surface. 2 8

Hyaluronic acidToo little evidence

A 2021 placebo-controlled trial studied 120 mg daily for 12 weeks in 40 healthy Asian adults aged 35–64. Several wrinkle, hydration and elasticity measures improved. This is a small, short study with authors employed by the ingredient supplier Kewpie; independent replication would make the result more convincing. The dose describes the experiment, not an established treatment regimen. 2

AstaxanthinMixed

A 2021 systematic review included nine randomized oral-supplement studies. Pooled results favored moisture and elasticity, with substantial variation between studies, but wrinkle depth did not improve significantly. A claim about smoother wrinkles should therefore not be inferred from the hydration findings. 8

What has a clearer place in a daily routine?

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, avoiding tanning and using moisturizer. These measures address sun damage and dryness directly. Adding many active skin-care products can cause irritation and make signs of aging more noticeable. 3

Topical retinoids are another option for selected concerns such as mild acne and fine lines; retinol products are used for uneven texture. This evidence concerns products applied to the skin, not oral vitamin A supplements. The choice depends on the skin problem and tolerance. 6

What does “well tolerated” leave unanswered?

The collagen combination was well tolerated during its trial. That observation is specific to the tested product and study period; it does not establish the safety of every collagen blend or indefinite use. 1

The hyaluronic-acid trial involved healthy adults and lasted 12 weeks. Its findings do not establish safety during pregnancy or in people with skin disease. 2

For topical retinoids, irritation and dryness matter, and these products should not be used during pregnancy. The AAD advises professional guidance when skin is already inflamed or very dry. 6

Which claims are not reviewed here?

This page does not assess oral biotin, vitamin A, vitamin E, omega-3 products or the other botanical ingredients listed for this outcome. It does not review procedures for acne scars.

Questions people ask

Will collagen powder smooth my skin?

Some trials report improvements, but the 2025 review found no significant benefits in its high-quality-study subgroup. A reliable visible benefit is not established. 7

Is oral hyaluronic acid the same as a filler?

No. The trial here tested swallowed hyaluronic acid. It did not compare the supplement with injected fillers, so its results cannot establish equivalent effects. 2

How long did researchers test these supplements?

The collagen combination and hyaluronic-acid trials described here both lasted 12 weeks. That is a study duration, not a promise of results by that date. 1 2

Does better hydration mean fewer wrinkles?

Not necessarily. The astaxanthin review found improved hydration and elasticity but no statistically significant reduction in wrinkle depth. 8

Should a new rough patch be checked?

Yes. The NHS recommends assessment of new patches and those that bleed, grow, change color, feel tender or develop into a lump. 4
