What it is studied for
The strongest rated effects first. Bars show the size of the effect, the letter grades the evidence, and each rating lists the studies behind it.
Does eating collagen send it straight to your skin?
Collagen is a structural protein in skin, tendons, bones, and other tissues. The body makes its own. Digestion breaks swallowed collagen down, so it does not arrive in the skin as an intact replacement for the collagen already there. 1
Skin and joints need different evidence
Skin trials have measured hydration and elasticity, while knee studies have measured pain, function, or range of motion. A result for one of these outcomes does not establish the others. 2 3 4

Questions people ask
How long were skin supplements tested?
Trials in the 2023 review lasted 2–12 weeks. They cannot establish what happens with years of use. 2
Is 40 mg the same as a scoop of collagen peptides?
No. The 40 mg knee study used an undenatured type II preparation, while many skin trials tested hydrolyzed collagen in gram amounts. 2 3
Does better skin hydration mean fewer visible wrinkles?
They are separate outcomes. In the 2025 review, higher-quality studies did not show significant improvements in hydration, elasticity, or wrinkles. 5
Is collagen necessary in a vegan diet?
No. The body makes collagen itself; eating animal collagen is not necessary for that process. 1
Can the knee evidence be applied to everyone?
The pooled pain and function findings concerned people with knee osteoarthritis. They do not establish prevention in people without arthritis. 4
