Skin Hydration

Dry, tight skin often needs help holding on to moisture. This page weighs everyday skin care against the smaller, less settled evidence for oral collagen and hyaluronic acid.

What does skin hydration feel like?

Dry skin may feel tight or rough and become flaky, itchy or cracked. The outer skin layer needs both fats and moisture-binding substances to maintain its barrier. 1

Research can measure water in that outer layer and water escaping through the skin, called transepidermal water loss. These measurements were used in a small oral hyaluronan trial; they describe skin properties rather than a diagnosis. 2

Why does skin keep drying out?

Long hot showers and harsh cleansers can remove protective oils. Cold, dry weather, aging, medicines and some diseases can also contribute, so a dry patch does not identify a nutritional deficiency. 3

When moisturizer is not enough

Persistent dryness despite care, severe itching or pain, and skin that oozes, becomes inflamed or fails to heal deserve medical assessment. A new rash, other physical symptoms or a recently started medicine can help explain the problem. 1

Can a supplement improve moisture levels?

The collagen review and hyaluronan trial below studied measurable skin changes. They give different reasons for caution: collagen results depend on study quality and funding, while the hyaluronan evidence here comes from one small trial. 2 4

CollagenMixed

A 2025 review combined 23 randomized trials involving 1,474 people. Overall results favored collagen for hydration, but the high-quality studies and studies without pharmaceutical-company funding did not show a benefit. That weakens confidence in the favorable pooled result. 4

Hyaluronic acidToo little evidence

In a 12-week trial, 40 healthy Asian adults aged 35–64 received 120 mg oral hyaluronan daily or placebo. Skin hydration and water-loss measures improved, but the sample was small and three authors were company employees. This is a study dose, not a recommendation. 2

What helps the skin hold on to water?

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends short, warm showers and fragrance-free cream or ointment applied while skin is still damp. Creams and ointments generally work better for dry skin than lotions. 5

Gentle cleansing, gloves for cold weather or wet work, and a humidifier in dry indoor air can reduce everyday stress on the skin. These are useful starting points before judging whether an oral product adds anything. 5

What these findings cannot promise

A favorable average from supplement trials is less reassuring when higher-quality studies do not reproduce it. The collagen review makes study quality and funding particularly relevant to a buying decision. 4

The hyaluronan trial lasted twelve weeks and enrolled healthy adults. Its results do not establish long-term safety or treatment for a skin disease. 2

Questions people ask

Is hyaluronic acid in a cream the same evidence as a capsule?

No. The trial described here tested oral hyaluronan; the AAD’s skin-care advice separately lists hyaluronic acid among ingredients used in moisturizers. 2 5

Does collagen reliably hydrate skin?

The 2025 review found favorable results overall, but not in its high-quality or non-industry-funded subgroups. That makes a dependable benefit uncertain. 4

Why does my skin feel worse after a long shower?

Hot water and prolonged washing can remove protective oils, contributing to dryness. Shorter, warm showers are part of the AAD’s dry-skin advice. 3 5

Can cracked or inflamed skin need medical care?

Yes. Persistent dryness, severe pain or itching, inflammation, oozing or poor healing warrant assessment rather than continued self-treatment alone. 1
