Omega-3 Phospholipids
Omega-3 phospholipids are EPA or DHA bound to phospholipid molecules rather than a separate omega-3 fatty acid. Krill oil contains omega-3s mainly in this form.

What it is studied for
The strongest rated effects first. Bars show the size of the effect, the letter grades the evidence, and each rating lists the studies behind it.
What are omega-3 phospholipids?
The term describes EPA or DHA carried in phospholipid molecules rather than a separate new omega-3 fatty acid. Krill oil contains omega-3s mainly in this form; fish oil naturally carries them mainly in triglycerides. Omega-3s also become part of cell-membrane phospholipids in the body, regardless of the claim printed on a supplement. 1 2
Why might the carrier matter?
Researchers ask whether the chemical form changes absorption and downstream metabolism. That is plausible enough to test, but three questions remain distinct: how much reaches the blood, how it is handled by tissues, and whether a person’s health improves. A short absorption experiment cannot answer all three. 2 3

Questions people ask
Are phospholipids a new type of omega-3?
They are a carrier form for fatty acids such as EPA and DHA, rather than a replacement name for those fatty acids. 1 2
Is krill oil definitely absorbed better?
No universal advantage is established. NIH reports mixed comparisons, and the small crossover trial favored krill oil but not krill meal. 1 2
Can phospholipids treat fatty liver?
Preclinical findings are promising, but the cited review calls for human clinical confirmation. 3
Does the brain study prove better memory?
It found changes in physiological brain measures over 12 weeks in a small group of older men, not proof of durable everyday-memory benefit. 4
Is 2 g krill oil the same as 2 g EPA plus DHA?
No. Total oil weight and the amounts of EPA and DHA are different label quantities. 1
