Omega-3 Phospholipids

Omega-3 phospholipids are EPA or DHA bound to phospholipid molecules rather than a separate omega-3 fatty acid. Krill oil contains omega-3s mainly in this form.

Which label amounts are useful?

Krill-oil weight, EPA content and DHA content describe different quantities. NIH notes wide variation across omega-3 formulations, making the separately listed EPA and DHA amounts important for comparison. A label emphasizing phospholipids alone does not tell you the EPA-plus-DHA dose tested in a trial. 1

What are the alternatives?

Fish oil, including triglyceride and ethyl-ester products, can raise blood EPA and DHA. Algal oils usually supply DHA and sometimes EPA, predominantly as triglycerides. Absorption comparisons between krill and fish oil are mixed, so the available evidence does not identify one carrier as universally preferable. 1
