Omega-3 Phospholipids
Omega-3 phospholipids are EPA or DHA bound to phospholipid molecules rather than a separate omega-3 fatty acid. Krill oil contains omega-3s mainly in this form.

Is krill oil better absorbed?
A crossover trial in 15 healthy participants compared single doses supplying about 1,700 mg EPA plus DHA as krill oil, krill meal or fish oil. Krill oil produced a larger 72-hour rise in the plasma phospholipid measure used as the primary endpoint. Krill meal did not outperform fish oil, so the result did not establish that phospholipids themselves were responsible. The trial was industry-sponsored and measured short-term availability, not disease outcomes. 1
Why are phospholipids studied for fatty liver?
A 2021 review found that preclinical studies suggested stronger reductions in liver fat with omega-3 phospholipids than with triglyceride-bound omega-3s. Proposed mechanisms involved liver, adipose tissue and gut metabolism. The authors explicitly called for clinical confirmation and further study of advanced liver disease. This is a treatment hypothesis, not established evidence that a phospholipid supplement reverses human fatty liver. 2
Promising preclinical liver-fat findings require clinical confirmation. 2
Are there preliminary findings for brain function?
A randomized trial assigned 45 healthy men aged 61–72 to krill oil, sardine oil or placebo for 12 weeks. It found changes in brain oxygenation during tasks and in an electrical-response timing measure after krill oil. These physiological signals justify further research, but the small, short trial does not establish dementia prevention or lasting improvement in everyday memory. 3
What happened in a larger knee-pain trial?
A 2024 randomized trial in 262 adults with painful knee osteoarthritis and MRI-visible effusion-synovitis found no pain advantage for 2 g krill oil daily over placebo after 24 weeks. Earlier trials had reported benefits in other knee-pain populations and at different doses. This direct negative result matters for that dose and patient group, without resolving every other proposed phospholipid use. 4
Can ordinary omega-3 evidence be borrowed?
EPA and DHA have a wider evidence base, including triglyceride lowering. But studies use different populations, doses and formulations. NIH describes mixed absorption findings for krill versus fish oil, so neither the carrier nor a change in blood levels establishes that a phospholipid product reproduces the outcomes of a prescription omega-3 trial. 5
