Why study the gut and liver?
A 2022 experiment tested astilbin from Smilax glabra in mice eating a high-fat diet. It reduced inflammation and insulin resistance, improved intestinal barrier measures and reduced liver fat accumulation. These findings support further investigation of the gut-liver connection; they do not demonstrate the same effects from a sarsaparilla supplement in people. 1
