Mineral
Silica
Silica is silicon dioxide, a compound of silicon and oxygen found in sand, quartz and plants such as horsetail. Supplements use it as a source of silicon.
What limits does German guidance propose?
BfR proposes daily supplement maxima of 350 mg silicon as silicon dioxide, 100 mg as silicic acid gel, and 10 mg in either choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid or monomethylsilanetriol. These are safety proposals, not effective doses. EFSA could not establish a general upper intake level because data were insufficient. 1
What about contamination?
Verbraucherzentrale reports concerning lead levels in some Kieselerde products. A natural mineral origin does not establish purity. 2
For information, not individual medical advice. Ingredient studies do not establish the effectiveness of these products.
