Hair Strength

Hair breakage, gentle care and the limits of nutrient claims.

What helps hair break less easily?

This guide looks at two practical questions: how to protect fragile strands during everyday care, and when a nutrient supplement has a role. Research on hair regrowth is discussed separately from claims about resistance to breakage.

What can weaken hair?

Heat styling, chemical treatments and rough handling can damage fragile hair. Conditioner reduces breakage and split ends. 1

When is an examination useful?

Hair loss has multiple causes. A dermatologist can investigate the cause rather than relying on a cosmetic supplement claim. 1

Does biotin strengthen healthy hair?

A 2024 review found that marketing biotin for hair loss in healthy people is not supported by the available research. The evidence was low quality and mainly concerned deficiency or underlying hair disorders. 2

BiotinToo little evidence

Insufficient evidence for extra biotin when supply is adequate; this is not proof of improved resistance to breakage. 2

What if a deficiency is present?

AAD recommends considering biotin, iron or zinc supplementation when testing demonstrates deficiency. Extra iron can be harmful when it is not needed. 3

Why mention biotin before a blood test?

Biotin supplements can distort laboratory results, including thyroid and heart-marker tests. BfR advises informing the clinician or laboratory about current or recent use. 4

Other ingredients

This profile does not assess collagen, silica, horsetail or the other imported hair-strength ratings.

Questions people ask

Is extra biotin proven?

Evidence does not support routine use in people with adequate biotin. 2
