Hydration Balance

Everyday drinking, sweat losses and rehydration after illness: where electrolytes fit, and what supplement trials measure.

Why does hydration change from day to day?

Dehydration develops when water intake falls short of losses. Heat, exercise, vomiting and diarrhea can shift that balance; thirst, headache and poor concentration may be early clues. 1

How much is enough on an ordinary day?

German DGE guidance suggests around 1.5 liters of low-calorie or calorie-free drinks daily, preferably water or unsweetened tea. Heat, sport and gastrointestinal fluid losses increase requirements. This is an everyday reference, not a fixed allowance for every situation. 2

When does dehydration need medical attention?

Persistent dizziness on standing, unusually little urine, unusual drowsiness or a fast heart rate can indicate serious dehydration requiring urgent assessment. 3

Can drinking too much also be harmful?

During prolonged exercise, drinking more than the body loses can dangerously dilute blood sodium, causing hyponatremia. The DGE sports position advises against drinking beyond thirst and recommends individualizing fluid plans. 4

When are electrolytes useful?

For substantial losses from vomiting or diarrhea, NHS guidance describes oral rehydration solutions that replace water, sugar, salts and minerals. A pharmacist can help select a suitable preparation for an adult or child. 3

What does the sodium research show?

The following trial concerns exercise in heat, not routine drinking at a desk. 5

SodiumToo little evidence

In a randomized crossover trial, sodium before exercise increased voluntary water intake and retention. Participants then completed an hour of cycling and a performance test at 30 °C; dehydration was lower and the test was faster than with placebo. This specific protocol does not establish a general need for salt loading. 5

How does this fit sports guidance?

The DGE position recommends carbohydrate and sodium intake for activities lasting longer than 1.5 hours. It also stresses that sweat losses vary and excessive fluid intake brings its own risks. 4

Does dandelion improve fluid balance?

The studies below measured urine output or urination frequency, not successful treatment of dehydration. 6 7

Dandelion leaf extractToo little evidence

A one-day pilot in 17 volunteers used 8 mL of leaf extract three times. Urination frequency rose after the first dose and the urine-to-fluid-intake ratio rose after the second. The uncontrolled, brief study cannot establish a hydration benefit. 6

Dandelion root powderToo little evidence

A 2026 crossover study in 14 active young adults compared 1 liter of water alone with water plus about 2.1 g of root powder. Urine output over four hours did not differ significantly. Leaf-extract findings cannot simply be transferred to this root preparation. 7

What matters before choosing a powder?

For everyday drinking, the DGE favors water and other low-calorie drinks. Alcoholic drinks are not recommended as part of that routine. 2

Which ingredients are outside this review?

This page does not assess potassium, chloride, magnesium glycinate, aloe vera or grapefruit as standalone hydration supplements.

Questions people ask

Does everyone need exactly 1.5 liters of drinks?

No. That is German everyday guidance; heat, exercise and additional fluid losses increase needs. 2

Is dark urine a useful clue?

Dark urine and reduced urination can accompany dehydration. IQWiG notes that urine color is less reliable in older people. 1

Are electrolyte products useful after diarrhea?

Oral rehydration solutions replace fluid and lost salts and sugar. Product selection can be discussed with a pharmacist, especially for children. 3

Should I force myself to drink during a long race?

Excessive intake can cause dangerous low blood sodium. The DGE recommends using thirst and an individualized plan rather than drinking beyond losses. 4

Does dandelion root make you lose more water?

The 2026 study found no significant extra urine output with the tested root powder over four hours. It does not settle every dose or preparation. 7
